You are so right. As a black person, I have been shaken at replies to my responses on race here at Medium that begin to sound like Elon Musk-land. Hostility, incivility, and the ever-present “not all” annoyance show the slow immigration of trolls from those spaces.

What makes it surprising is that my responses have often been what I consider to be benign on issues I thought were common knowledge. It would no longer be a surprise to find a “that didn’t happen” snark.

But having experienced exactly the type of racism when my sister and I won the first public library summer reading contest under desegregation, but were left off the winner list, I have experienced it. In real life. Our mom, a teacher, questioned the published results of all white kids, took us to the library, and we all found out the truth together. Indelible experience.
