Looking at the etymology of παῖς suggests a more sinister possibility. As well as “servant” or “slave,” the word can also mean “boy child,” which seems confirmed by cognates in other languages, including Latin (“puer” used in many Christmas carols for a young boy, ex. Puer natus in Bethlehem).
