I was in a different situation—academia— where my credentials were better than most of the men (black, white, and Hispanic) at the same rank or above. It was often made clear that I thought a lot of myself (aka "uppity"). And in fact, one underqualified white female VP blocked one of my campus grants because she thought I had gotten "too much." This was the first time a grant that had been approved at the faculty/professional staff level had been blocked in this way. She and others clumsily tried to block tenure and promotion, but when I left the position, I was a tenured full professor with a paid research trip to Europe. But the hoops to jump through were dispiriting.
