As I’ve said elsewhere, most people who use such terms don’t mean harm, but in fact do harm. Consider whether you have ever referred to a white person’s words as “articulate.” The word is a historical trigger. You can compliment good clear writing without it (ex. “well-said,” “elegantly expressed”). There are lots of thoughtful words a thesaurus can provide.

Now that you know that particular word can hurt, what will you do? Will you insist on your right to use it in these situations, or will you empathize with those who already have several daily micro-aggressions on their plate? Your choice.
